For a long time, it doesn't seem clear whether the planned Alpine trip can start on Friday. This is because a southerly foehn will be blowing in the Alps during the day. This will be a faithful companion next weekend. It is already the fourth weekend in a row where a Föhn storm is raging in the Alps. As a result, we have already canceled all alpine trips for the weekend on Thursday. Instead, I've organized a standard ride for Saturday morning. But now everything in order:
On Friday 8.3. we start in Tiefencastel GR at 7:10 in the morning. We start at 1500-2000 m up to the Churwalden area. We have a wonderful view of the Lenzerheide ski region. At Malix we then climb to 3500 m and head east at over 20kmh. In this weather, however, I definitely want to land in the middle Prättigau near Jenaz. We reach our intended landing field after 2 hours 30 minutes. A fantastic ride over the fresh and snow-covered mountains comes to an end. The March sun already has a lot of power and so the weather at the landing site is already T-shirt weather.... so signs that the end of this Alpine season is approaching😅
On Saturday morning, March 9, the weather conditions are promising. A moderate foehn wind is blowing in the Alps. I decide to take off from Urnäsch AR. In Appenzellerland there is even snow down to the valley floor. We quickly reach the south wind and head north at around 30 kmh. Unfortunately, the fog has spread a little in the Fürstenland. We correct a few kilometers to the west in the easterly wind and climb up into the southerly wind again at Flawil. We cross the fog field and then quickly reach the fog-free Thur and Aachtal valleys. The landing of this really beautiful and exciting flight takes place after 2 hours close to Lake Constance near Langrickenbach.
Even though the weather was extremely changeable and unstable this week, we were at least able to complete two great flights.😊
